Power-to-X

What is Power-to-X?

Power-to-X (also called PtX or P2X) is a simple but powerful idea:
Take clean electricity from the sun or wind and turn it into fuels, gases, chemicals, or even food that we can store, move, and use anywhere.

How it works – in 3 easy steps

1. Electricity (Power)
We use extra renewable electricity (when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing strongly).

2. Turn electricity into something useful
The electricity splits water into hydrogen (a clean gas). This step is called electrolysis.

3. Make “X” – almost anything you need

The hydrogen can be used directly or combined with carbon dioxide (CO₂) to create different products.

Common examples of “X”

– Power-to-Hydrogen | Pure hydrogen (H₂) | Fuel cell cars, industry, energy storage
– Power-to-Gas | Renewable natural gas (Methane) | Heating homes, cooking, existing gas pipes
– Power-to-Ammonia | Green ammonia | Fertilizer for farming, ship fuel
– Power-to-Chemicals | Methanol and other chemicals | Plastics, paints, medicines, ship fuel

Why is Power-to-X important?

– Stores renewable energy for days, weeks, or months
– Helps planes, ships, and heavy industry go green (electric batteries don’t work well for them)
– Turns excess wind and solar power into useful products instead of wasting it
– Can recycle CO₂ instead of releasing more into the air

In short, Power-to-X lets us use clean electricity for almost everything – not just lights and gadgets – making the whole world run on renewable energy.
