Indonesia is one of the countries that has a lot of renewable energy potential, based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) in December 2019, the potential for renewable energy is as follows.

One of the renewable energies is the use of water energy for power plants, based on the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No.4 / 2020 that Hydroelectric Power is an electricity generator that utilizes water energy derived from the flow or waterfall of river and hydropower from reservoirs or dams. or irrigation channels whose construction for multipurpose.

Power plants that utilize water energy are classified according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and PLN as follows.

  1. PLTA (Hydroelectric power plant) is a power plant that utilizes water energy with a generated energy capacity greater than 10 MW (>10 MW).
  2. PLTM (Mini Hydro power plant) is a power plant that utilizes water energy with a generated energy capacity of between 1 MW up to 10 MW (1 MW – 10 MW).
  3. PLTMH (Micro Hydro power plant) is a power plant that utilizes water energy with an generated energy capacity of less than 1 MW (<1 MW).

Refer to data image above that the potential for renewable energy with power plants that utilize water energy, spesifically PLTA up to 75 GW (Giga Watt), and PLTM / PLTMH up to 19.3 GW (Giga Watt), with realization until the end of 2019 for PLTA only 5.18 GW (6.7%) and PLTM / PLTMH only 0.23 GW (1.23%). With this, there is a lot of potential for renewable energy with power plants that utilize water energy which has not yet been utilized.
